Steely Dan is not Yacht Rock. Sorry. That's why Donald Fagen responded the way he did ("go eff yourself").

With that out of the way: I saw SD in 2006. They had Michael McDonald opening for them (because he used to sing with them). The audience went wild when he closed with, you guessed it, What a Fool Believes.

Steely Dan is definitely something else (if you’re calling it just smooth music, then Aja and Gaucho would fit. I’m surprised they didn’t talk more about Gaucho). But I’m definitely not surprised by Fagen’s response, and don’t blame him really.

I keep waiting for TikTok'ers to discover MY novels, and like them for all the wrong reasons. Then I'll know how Fagen feels (somehow I think it'll be worth it).

I don't want a "7-day free subscription" to Max just so I can watch this, since I hate those things. When I can rent it for a fixed fee, then I'll watch.

Great write up! Like you, I’m glad they didn’t spend too much time on the hats and kitschy side of it all. They can keep that on the low rent cruise ships.

I will say that I was really taken aback when Lukather talked about how he was just going to work everyday. I mean, it makes total sense, but I’d never thought of it from the other side like that.

Professionalism is such an appropriate word for this music. The people who made this music were going to work and doing it at the absolute top level. They were pros.
